Term 1: Lesson 1:
Intro to Emotional Intelligence (EQ): “WHY ARE ALL EMOTIONS IMPORTANT AND NECESSARY? Girls identified different emotions and linked them to particular experiences. Homework: The class was given an “Emotion of the Day” and each girl needed to identify a scene from their favourite movie/TV show/Book where a character experienced that emotion and describe why.
Lesson 2: Understanding ME and My Emotions: “MY SPECIAL GIFTS AND TALENTS” class discussion. The class expressed positive emotions through self-reflection and self-appreciation. Homework: Girls started their “Gratitude and Growth Journals” in which they write daily notes of appreciation to themselves/something they’re grateful for that day, etc
Lesson 3: Expressing my Emotions in a Positive Way:
“TOOLS FOR MANAGING NEGATIVE EMOTIONS”. The girls were taught how to use “I-statements” to express their feelings in situations where someone “pushed their buttons” or hurt their feelings. They were also taught how to use the 4-step method for making a “Proper Apology”.
Term 2: (So Far)
Lesson 1: Understanding and Respecting Others: “HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR FRIEND?” This “game-show style” activity had the girls in small teams, responding to various scenarios with how they think their nominated team-mate would have reacted; demonstrating that people can have different perspectives and responses to the same situation. The girls also had to try to #LoseLikeaLady (i.e with grace, using I-statements to express disappointment, congratulating the winning team). The game-show could have only 1 winning team and this “pushed a few buttons” but gave the girls an opportunity to practice what they’d learnt last term. Homework: Girls are to make a note in their journals, of incidences where they had a differing perspective/response in a situation with a friend or classmate i.e. What happened? Why do they think it happened? What did they do? What could they have done differently?
