2019 Founders Day
Next week we celebrate Founders’ Day. We invite all past pupils of WGJS and WGHS to join us for our Flag Raising Ceremony on 12 September. Please see below for details and RSVP to email@example.com before 7 September 2019. Regret no babies or toddlers.
Welcome to new staff
A huge welcome to Ms Dezanne Barnes who joins the Finance Team. As a WGHS past pupil, we trust she will soon feel at home again. Ms Barnes fills the vacancy of Mrs Makinson.
Safety and security – a note from the SGB
As parents and educators, we are all concerned about the safety and well-being of our daughters, particularly in the environment in which we live with daily news reports of abductions, rape, and worse, murders.
WGJS makes every effort to ensure that the school environment is safe and secure. This happens at great cost – i.e. the installation of cameras, security guards, spiked fencing, etc.
Whilst the school strives to provide this environment, it still remains the responsibility of each parent to ensure that the girls are dropped and collected within a reasonable period of time.
Many girls wait for the start of school from as early at 06:10 am till as late as 18:00.
Please note that the policy and responsibility of the school only commences from 07:30 till half an hour after the specific school extra-mural your daughter participates in.
Your co-operation in this regard would be appreciated.

Thank you to all the parents who responded to our uniform survey in the last newsletter. The points raised will be taken under consideration by the SGB.
Wynberg Girls’ Alumnae – Self Defence Workshop
The Wynberg Girls’ Alumnae will be hosting a self-defence workshop on Saturday, 21 September 2019 at 10h00 at WGHS. This workshop will be presented by Sanette Smit (Smitti), an 8th Dan Black Belt Karate expert with over 40 years’ experience in self-defence.
Any woman at any time can find herself in a threatening situation. The skills you learn in this workshop will add to your personal safety, your confidence, strength and intuition.
Smitti presented a workshop last year and it was so successful! She’s agreed to return for a second workshop so that more women can be empowered. Smitti’s two-hour workshops are adaptable for women of all ages, shapes and sizes. We will learn how to identify potential threats – including rape – and how to apply techniques to defend ourselves.
When: Saturday, 21 September 2019. 10h00 to 12h00.
Venue: Wynberg Girls’ High School, Aliwal Road, Wynberg
Who can attend: All women 15 years and older are welcome. If there is a group of girls between the ages below the age of 15 that wish to attend, Margaret Neethling (senior self-defence instructor) will be available to present an age-appropriate introductory lecture prior to the joint physical training session
How to book: Space is limited. To reserve your spot or for more info, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone a committee member of the Wynberg Girls’ Alumnae at 082 4144 771. In reply, we will send you the banking details and directions.
Cost: R200 per head, payable by Thursday, 12 September 2019 to secure a place.
Who is hosting this: The workshop is hosted by the Wynberg Girls’ Alumnae, a network that supports and applauds past learners of Wynberg Girls’ Schools and women everywhere.
