Term Four is a fun-filled and exciting term! We are pleased to introduce, as a once-off, two fabulous Life Orientation choices, fuelled from within WGJS by some of our enthusiastic teachers and coaches. Ultimate Frisbee and Formal Cheerleading will be added to our repertoire of sporting choices as pilot projects. We look forward to seeing some of our girls participating in these choices.
We will be turning our attention to Water-polo, Tennis, and Swimming as Extra Murals in Term 4 and are very keen to be out and about in the sun and having fun with all our Summer Sports champions.
Water-polo matches take place on Wednesday afternoons from 15h30. Tennis matches are played on Thursdays and Swimming galas take place on Friday afternoons. All of these sports are played at various venues and parents of those learners selected to participate in these events will be notified via email. Please, do, however, check the term calendar for applicable dates.
Should your daughter wish to play any of these sports extramurally, please check the sports extramural timetable (see below) for the practice times. All players will need to attend afternoon practices in order to be eligible for selection. Kindly note that no parents are allowed to watch practices but are very welcome to come along and support their children on match day. We are following a policy of positive encouragement and urge all parents watching to give their daughter lots of enthusiastic and positive comments! This includes being patient with umpires and adopting a spirit of sportsmanship towards any opposition.
In Tennis, we are asked not to coach the girls and not to umpire or score for them – the collective thinking amongst all our Tennis opposition is to empower our girls to play independently. We ask our parents to follow this policy and not to umpire, score or coach during the games. Applause for all good tennis is welcome, regardless of whether the players are wearing WGJS colours or not.
We congratulate Nicole Bantom (U13A) and Naledi Kaseya (U13B) for being selected to represent Western Province at National Water-Polo Tournament in December 2019.
We also congratulate our Tennis players, Emily Simons, Amber Smith and Kiara Barker for making it into the final rounds of Western Province Tennis and into WP Zonals. We await final news of where they place, but we are very proud of them all. Special mentions to Hannah and Isabella Smith and Michaela Chickwete who also attended the trials and who represented WGJS with pride.
