Music
Music forms an integral part of life at WGJS. Through music our girls learn how to perform together and how to interact. We have various groups, including four choirs, a vocal ensemble, three marimba bands, two string ensembles, a flute ensemble, a clarinet choir and a full orchestra. Private tuition is also offered in piano, recorder, clarinet, flute, saxophone, guitar, violin, cello and drums.
Over 150 girls participate in our choirs:
Tiptoe Choir (Grade 1)
Junior Choir (Grades 2 and 3)
Intermediate Choir (Grades 4 and 5)
Senior Choir (Grades 6 and 7)
Vocal Ensemble – auditions only (Grades 5, 6 and 7)
Our choirs perform at choir festivals around the Peninsula as well as at school functions and concerts, enthusiastically maintaining a high level of performance. We have performed at the Cape Town Eisteddfod, receiving Honours and a Diploma.
All our choirs (apart from Vocal Ensemble) are open to any girl who wishes to sing. There are no auditions, and all girls are welcome!
Vocal Ensemble is a 3 and 4-part harmony and they perform to a high standard, with various schools at theatres around Cape Town.
Our three marimba bands receive tuition under Mrs Colleen Hart. The marimba items on our concert programmes are always met with much excitement! Each band consists of between 4 to 8 members.
We have a large string department, and these girls perform together in a junior and senior string ensemble. We have a school orchestra made up of 40 members who perform at school functions, local eisteddfods and various concerts.
For piano, recorder, clarinet, flute, saxophone, guitar, violin, cello and drums, learners can enroll for individual tuition from Grade R (on certain instruments). Music theory and aural training form part of the lesson in all instruments and when learners undertake exams they attend separate theory classes. We encourage participation in external examinations and some of our learners have been named on the UNISA Roll of Honours and played at the Associated Board High Achievers concerts after achieving outstanding examination results.
