Music

Music at Wynberg Girls’ Junior School is relevant, upbeat and most importantly, holistic. We aim to teach the whole child and offer music as therapy first and foremost.

Over 200 girls participate in our choirs:

Junior Choir (Grades 2)
SA Proud (Grade 3)
Concert Choir (Grades 4-7)
Vocal Ensemble – auditions only (Grades 5, 6 and 7)

Our music department at WGJS boasts four full-time music teachers who are able to teach recorder, flute, oboe,  piano, violin, cello, voice and various ensembles such as marimba, Orff, Mini Maestros, string ensembles, orchestra and choirs. We also have an additional 8 part-time music teachers coming in weekly to teach Piano, Recorder, Clarinet, Saxophone, Cello, French Horn, Double Bass, Voice, Guitar, Ukulele and various percussion instruments, including but not limited to Drum Kit.

At WGJS we offer the following instruments and ensembles:

Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Guitar, Ukulele, Recorder, JFlute, Flute, Clarineo, Clarinet, Oboe, Jsax, Saxophone, French Horn, Voice and Drum kit, two Orff ensembles, three marimba teams, a junior choir, SA Proud choir, Concert Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Orchestra, String Ensembles, Fusion Band, and a Mini Maestros Grade R Music Program.

We have Campus Orchestral Concerts with the rest of the schools in the Wynberg Campus of Schools community, where our learners are able to showcase their talents and perform alongside their brothers and sisters in the campus of schools.

Our choirs are very fortunate to be a part of the Campus Choral Concert that takes place at the City Hall every second year, with our next one taking place in 2027!

We also take part in the annual Cape Town Eisteddfod , which we are fortunate to host as well, and our choirs, marimba teams, string ensembles, orchestra and soloists do exceptionally well, achieving nothing less than Honours.

Apart from all our external involvement and activities, we have annual InterSen Phase Concerts, Foundation Phase Concerts as well as our Prestige Concert towards the end of the year.

Is music available to everyone at WGJS?

Our class music programmes are offered to Grades R-7 during the school day and is part of the curriculum.

Our individual instruments and selected ensembles are offered at a cost per term. This information can be found in our music policy and on the music application form.
